5/7/14: Cubs Can't Hold Off White Sox In Cup Loss

Chicago, IL- Well the Cubs are not Crosstown Cup winners this year. They have dropped three straight games to the  White Sox out of four.

Travis Wood struggled out of the gate as he gave up an RBI single to Alexei Ramirez in the first inning. He walked Viciedo and Konerko in the inning along with a double to Abreu.

Luis Valbuena tied up the game with an RBI double in the top of the second at 1-1, but that lead didn't last long.

Wood had another rough inning in the bottom of the fourth. He led off the inning getting Konerko out, but trouble came afterwards. Moises Sierra hit a single, and advanced to second on an error by Luis Valbuena. Next, Marcus Semien and Adrian Nieto walked. However, Semien was picked off first. Soon, Gordon Beckham hit a go-ahead three-run home run which gave the White Sox a 4-1 lead.

The Cubs looked like they were coming back in the top of the fifth with a homer by Olt and RBI double by Bonafacio, but the inning ended on a questionable strikeout by Anthony Rizzo.

With the Cubs only trailing 4-3 into the bottom of the fifth, it looked like things were going to be close. However that wasn't the case, as Paul Konerko hit a bases-clearing double in the inning to give the White Sox a 7-3 lead. Afterwards, Travis Wood's day ended, but Brian Schlitter was hit hard too. He ended up giving up an RBI single to Marcus Semien, and the White Sox finished the game 8-3 after nine innings.

Game Notes:
-Rick Renteria was ejected in the fifth inning, which was his third ejection this season.

-Alexei Ramirez had a great play in the top of the seventh, catching a line out from Valbuena.

-Daniel (DanielDoreCTC)
