Preview: Cubs and Cardinals May 12, 2014

Chicago, IL- Tonight, the Cubs begin a four-game series with the Cardinals in St. Louis. After being swept by the Braves in Atlanta, the Cubs will be looking for success against their rivals. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are coming back from Pittsburgh, where they lost two of three to the Pirates. So far this season, both teams are 3-3 against one another.

Travis Wood will be eyeing success, as he comes back after a terrible start against the White Sox. In that game, he gave up eight earned runs in four innings pitched. So far this season he is 2-4 with a 4.75 ERA. A former relief pitcher, Tyler Lyons has translated well into the starting rotation. The twenty-six year old has had quality outings in two of his three starts this season. The lefty is currently 0-2 with a 3.43 ERA.

One player the Cubs are looking to heat up in this series is Nate Schierholtz. Last night, he went 1 for 3 with a two-run RBI double. He is currently batting .195 with 0 HR and 12 RBI. For being a constant name in the lineup, he needs to contribute similar to last year when he batted .251 with 21 HR and 68 RBI. Bonifacio needs to also start hitting again, as he only has seven hits and two walks in his last thirty-eight at-bats. This season has been a slow start for some Cardinals hitters such as: Jhonny Peralta, Allen Craig, Matt Carpenter, Mark Ellis, and Peter Bourjos. However, in the last ten days all of these cold hitters have been hitting over .300 besides Mark Ellis. The Cardinals will look to carry that hot hitting into this neck-to-neck rivalry series.
